Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
