Prime Small Screen Selections: 7 Essential Motion Pictures This Week

Pick of the Week

This Satirical Thriller

The filmmaker's bold satire addresses the demanding standards for women's appearance as well as the dreaded aspects of advancing years. Demi Moore presents a masterful acting turn playing Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress reduced to starring in an aerobics show on the small screen. Edged out thanks to her unscrupulous employer her manager Harvey, she turns to a mysterious and gruesome procedure called the Substance. This creates a younger clone portrayed by Margaret Qualley, resulting in a steadily more vampiric relationship among both women. This Friday, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10

This Agatha Christie-esque story includes the talented actress in the role of Laura, an ace reporter who decides to take some time off from reporting on international wars to board a luxury cruise with an ailing Norwegian shipping heiress and donor, her husband, plus additional affluent passengers. Yet once a mysterious woman disappears from the ship during the evening and all passengers insists she wasn't real, her journalistic curiosity kick in. Streaming currently, Netflix

This Supernatural Story

The acclaimed director tests his directorial skills through this nifty paranormal narrative filmed completely from the perspective of the spirit. When a household with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe occupies their fresh home, the camera – representing the ghost – follows them around. Chloe seems conscious of the supernatural presence, and the entity appears defensive toward her. Yet what is the reason? It's a fun idea that doesn't outstay its welcome, featuring a surprise that may be unexpected. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Nicolas Cage embraces his cult stardom through this meta comedy caper. He portrays an egotistical celebrity playing himself who takes on a $1m payday to attend a festive event in Mallorca for the wealthy Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Hired by the CIA to gather intel on the alleged criminal, his unique performing skills proves useful. This Saturday, 9pm, on Channel 4

The Black Phone

Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller holds up well despite the lack of a continuation. Located in 1970s Colorado, multiple child abductions has rendered the local kids anxious. After Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and held captive in a cellar, he fears the worst. But the disconnected phone mounted nearby keeps ringing, with eerie communicators providing assistance, as the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister could save him. A solid creepfest. October 11th, 10.50pm, Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the conflict between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for materialism in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top film adaptation of the disgraced televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield plays the venal Jim, who declares early on, asserting religious justification for riches. Both individuals set about monetising the American public's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, excessive cosmetics and insincerity, yet Chastain achieves to present the character with compassion. Tuesday 14 October, early morning, Film4

This Espionage Thriller

This week's additional entry from Steven Soderbergh is a intelligence thriller as precise similar to the collars used by Michael Fassbender's British agent. He receives a mission to identify a traitor inside the organization from a group of five – among them is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are masters of deadpan cool, leading to a delightful mind game of truth or lie takes place. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the intelligent intelligence fun. October 17th, multiple time slots, the Sky channel
