Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these medications need to be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting generally have a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if something activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
